Pope Francis is making his longest overseas trip yet. Over a span of 12 days, he will visit Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and Singapore.
In Timor-Leste, Pope Francis' visit will be highly anticipated. It will raise the visibility of the fledging nation, which gained independence only in 2002. Timor-Leste also has the world's highest proportion of Catholics, at 97% of the population. Faced with severe economic challenges and unemployment, will the pontiff's visit be the spark needed to galvanise the country?
The Pope will also visit Timor-Leste's neighbour, Indonesia, making good on President Jokowi's invite. How will the Pope's visit reinforce Indonesia's image as a moderate nation?
