In this tutorial we use custom buffers to create Surface and Object ID's out of Lightwave 3D and into After Effects. Then using adjustment layers and Set Matte effect to isolate particular surfaces and objects.

Notes:
If passes look incorrect in After Effects when 'Added' together, check you're in 32bit mode in and are using "Blend Colors Using 1.0 Gamma", both in Project Settings.

For more objects, or more surfaces per object you can create multiple sets of RGB channels, keeping track with refined buffer names (ie. CharacterOBJ IDs, PropOBJ IDs).

At the moment I'm not seeing much different in render time with and without the additional RGB Matte buffers.
