OSI stands for Open System Interconnection
OSI model was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1984
The OSI model consists of seven layers and each layer has specific functions and responsibilities
The OSI model is a helpful reference for understanding how different networking protocols and technologies interact within a networked environment
The OSI model is divided into two layers: upper layers and lower layers.

OSI Reference Model
Application Layer (Layer 7):
The topmost layer is responsible for providing network services directly to end-users or applications.
Ex: HTTP, SMTP, FTP
Presentation Layer (Layer 6):
Handles data translation, encryption, and compression to ensure that data is exchanged.
Session Layer (Layer 5):
Manages and controls the dialog between two devices or systems.
It establishes, maintains, and terminates communication sessions, allowing for synchronization and error handling.
Transport Layer (Layer 4):
Responsible for end-to-end communication and data segmentation.
It ensures that data is reliably delivered from one system to another
Ex TCP and UDP
Network Layer (Layer 3):
Handles routing and forwarding of data packets between different networks.
Ex: IPv4 and IPv6
Data Link Layer (Layer 2):
Deals with framing, addressing, and error detection at the local network level.
Ex: STP, MAC, Switch, HSRP
Physical Layer (Layer 1):
Defines the physical medium and the hardware components needed to transmit raw binary data across it.
Ex: Cable, NIC card
