Berlin-based Transparency International released the latest edition of its Corruption Perceptions Index on Wednesday.

In Asia,... Singapore received the highest marks,... taking 8th place,... followed by Hong Kong and Japan.
South Korea was ranked at 37th,... with a score of 56.
That′s one point higher than last year,... but the score has basically remained at the same level for seven straight years... since 2008.
Among the 34 OECD member countries,... South Korea ranks fairly low,... with only six countries, including Turkey and Mexico,... more corrupt than South Korea.
The South Korean branch of Transparency International said... last year′s high-profile political bribery scandal,... which resulted in Prime Minister Lee Wan-koo stepping down from his post,... and corruption involving defense contractors,... had a negative impact on the country′s ranking.
The lowest marks were given to North Korea and Somalia, which tied for 167th place with just 8 points each.
The index measures perceived levels of corruption in the public sector in 168 countries,.. based on expert opinion and corruption-related data from various institutions.
