Here is a video outlining the Montessori approach to introducing language to children under 3.

Summary:

Support pre-literacy skills by speaking to them since birth
Tell stories, sing songs, have conversations
** Help them hear and identify the sounds of speech **
Play sound games - "I Spy" and more

DON'T teach the symbols of language before they learn the sounds of the language itself.

The symbols/alphabet is introduced after the sounds are mastered, usually around 3.5 to 4 years old.
