How to get gap free sequence numbers
The first rule of gap free sequences is .... just forget about it and allow gaps :-)
But if for some reason that is not an option, here is a relatively scalable mechanism using some of the features designed for Advanced Queuing to allow sequence number allocation which is gap free but has a couple of compromises.
