What If will be developed as an animated anthology series that will explore how the Marvel Cinematic Universe might have unfolded if key moments in its history had not occurred as in the canon. For example, what if Loki had found Thor's hammer? What if the X-Men died on their first mission? The story possibilities are endless and there is potential for the main actors in live-action films to reprise their roles in the animated series. Each episode would address a different story, focusing on tales set in alternate universes.
The comics of the saga in question began to be released in 1977, and over time they had 200 published editions. The stories range from impossible situations to the most ridiculous. It's not clear yet whether the animated series will follow the stories of the comics, or take advantage of original plots.
Bryan Andrews (Samurai Jack) will take over the direction of the project, while Ashley Bradley (Trollhunters) will sign the script.
