Referencing your mix using Magic AB
It’s good practise to reference your mixes against finished tracks, as your ears can get quickly tricked into believing that your mix is AWESOME, only for you to find when you listen back to it with fresh ears the next day that it’s awesomely bad. However, you’ll want to listen through the same monitoring setup that you’re using to mix, so that you’re comparing like for lie. That often involves creating sub-mix busses and reference track channels so that you can mute one and then the other, which is a klutzy solution at best, or you end up swapping leads so that you can listen to reference tracks from another source, (but not MP3s, right?). Wouldn’t it be great if you could just do it all with a single click? Oh, wait….
