Using VMware vSphere 5 Hot-Add to Dynamically Add CPU
Here we have an instance of MS SQL Server OLTP like TPCE Database running on a standalone virtual machine named "SA-SQL" starts consuming a lot of resources and, as a result, the VM starts running out of CPU. If the application is mission critical and has to be highly available, you can't just shut it down to add more CPU. These are the kind of instances when a Hot-Add feature can be very useful.
