New York City has begun converting pay phones to free public Wi-Fi hotspots. This was done as a joint venture between Van Wagner Communications and the owners of the pay phones throughout the city. To date, 10 pay phones (Manhattan: 8, Brooklyn: 2, Queens 1) have been retrofited to provide wireless internet access. The long-term goal is for 13,000 pay phones to become Wi-Fi hotspots.
