The story behind the name "Linux" itself, is actually an interesting one. It’s obviously derived from the name of its creator, Linus Torvalds, and Unix. But before that, Linus wanted to call it Freax, as in Free, Freak (because only a freak would use an OS built by a nobody), and X from Unix, which is the name he used for about half a year because he thought Linux was too egotistical. That is until the files were uploaded to the FTP server of FUNET in September 1991, and Ari Lemmke of Helsinki University of Technology, a volunteer administrator for the FTP server at the time, named the project Linux on the server without consulting Torvalds, because he did not think “Freax” was a good name. I’m inclined to agree with him on that one. Later, however, Torvalds eventually consented to “Linux”.
