S. Korea to remove now-defunct barbed wire and military facilities by 2021

Now-defunct barbed wire fences and military facilities near South Korea's coasts will be taken down by the year 2021... for the benefit of local residents and tourists.
The defense ministry announced Tuesday that over 280 kilometers of barbed wire no longer in use will be removed... and replaced by cutting-edge surveillance equipment.
The fences are mostly located on the shores of the West Sea and the East Sea.
The ministry also decided to take down more than eight-thousand military-related facilities by year 2021 that are either too old to use or no longer needed.
In an official statement, Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo stressed that the decisions were made after closely examining the facilities strategic importance.
