Sonam spoke about the Commonwealth, describing it as a federation, and highlighting that its member countries constitute one-third of the world's population, one-third of the world's oceans, and one-fourth of the world's land. She also mentioned the different qualities that each country brings to the table and stated that the best voices from all over the world are welcome. However, netizens were quick to criticize Sonam's speech, calling it shameful and accusing her of thanking the British Empire for enslaving India. One user pointedly asked if she thanked the British Empire in her speech for enslaving and looting India. Another user commented on the simplicity of her speech, comparing it to that of a fifth-grader in an English speech competition. While attending the coronation ceremony of King Charles III was a significant achievement for Sonam Kapoor, her speech has resulted in widespread criticism from people who found it to be lacking in depth and cultural sensitivity.
