Rachmaninoff gave his last recital in Knoxville Tennessee on February 17,1943 one month before his death. He began the recital with a Bach English Suite.
After listening to Rachmaninoff's performance of his transcription of the third violin partita with its superb articulation, rhythmic verve and stylistically informed pedaling, one recalls the unfortunate fact that he never recorded any of the un--hyphenated Bach that was in his repertoire.
