We knew Alex as this person who would sometimes visit our co-workers and show them interesting demos of things that he and his teammates had recently made. So, we of course wanted to see those demos for ourselves! We tracked him down, and his teammate Chris, to learn more about what their team at Google does.

Turns out, the Airbender team is a small group of folks working on physical interaction research & development. Their main focus is to invent new ways for people to interact with computers. And in their quest to do so, they make a ton of different stuff –– including gesture recognition, computer vision, multi-device interactions, VR input, sound, haptics, bad ideas/mistakes/accidental discoveries, and more.

And here’s the Radiolab episode we mentioned, which tells the story of how penicillin was accidentally discovered → http://www.radiolab.org/story/best-me... (And if you want to know more about penicillin/mold, we also recommend Surprisingly Awesome's episode about mold: https://gimletmedia.com/episode/1-mold/.)

Thanks to our our friend Vibe Mountain for the music in this episode, and our friends Julia Melograna and Zoë Lotus for the illustrations and animations.
