The error 522 is a common issue for websites using a content delivery network (CDN) service like Cloudflare.

Cloudflare helps speed up the network connection between a browser and the origin server. However, sometimes the server fails to respond within a specified time, causing this Cloudflare error.

How to fix the error 522? Here are three methods to choose from:

🟣 Check if the web server is working

Checking if your web server is active and accepting HTTP requests is the first step to troubleshoot the error 522.

👉 For Hostinger users, head to hPanel - Order Usage and look at the CPU usage, memory limit, processes, and bandwidth. Reaching the maximum threshold for any of these metrics can cause the error 522. So, check if the purple line touches the red line on the graphs.

🟣 Review Cloudflare DNS settings

An IP address mismatch can cause this Cloudflare error. So, the A Records on the hosting server and Cloudflare have to match to avoid this issue.

👉 Open the DNS Zone Editor and check the A Records to fix the error 522. In addition, check your Cloudflare Configuration Menu to match the IP addresses with the ones on your server. If they are different, change them on Cloudflare’s DNS settings.

Note that DNS updates can take up to 24 hours to propagate.

🟣 Look through other web server settings

Another solution is to check the website’s server settings:

👉 Enable KeepAlive by adding code to your .htaccess file.

👉 Make sure to allow Cloudflare IP addresses. With Hostinger, head to hPanel - Other - IP Manager, include Cloudflare IPs under the Allow an IP Address section, and click Add.

👉 Disable Cloudflare temporarily. For Hostinger users, head to the hPanel - Cloudflare and toggle the Service status off and click the Save button.
