So, it is possible to add scanlines and screen ghosting like the original Game Boy using the Super Game Boy / 2. Well, actually it is closer to the original Game Boy Color screen refhresh rate.
Enable scanlines / screen ghosting mode
Super Game Boy (J) (V1.0).sfc

Super Game Boy (W) (V1.1).sfc

Super Game Boy 2 (J) (V1.16) [!].sfc

While I'm at it, I might as well state that there is no evidence of Nintendo planning to implement the function (or the interlacing scanline mode discovery I made tweet thing that went viral) Hori / Nintendo probably could have implemented a SGB command SCREEN for screen effects (and boy did they coome close with the OBJ_TRN that I also discovered years ago and how to enable it in games... expect a post about this topic at a later date.
The point is that they just set up the PPU INIT and even though there is a specific flag to enable it, that doesn't provide sufficient evidence of it being an unused mode.
The image I posted shows what happens if all of the SNES screen modes are activated. This could be achieved by setting the accumulator byte A9 to 44 or FF for a black screen.
