Hello everyone, my name is Rina Hicks, and today I’m here to talk to you about global market investing and why you should consider it.
In simple terms, investing in global markets means investing in assets that are spread across different countries, including your own. Traditionally, many of us have focused solely on investing within our home country—whether it’s through the local stock market, bond market, or other assets. However, over time, people have realized that concentrating all investments in one country exposes you to the risks specific to that nation.
Take Kenya, for example. Recently, we've experienced downgrades from agencies like Moody's and S&P 500 due to the country’s growing debt. These downgrades make it harder for the nation to borrow, leading to rising interest rates and other financial challenges. When you invest only in your home country, you are subject to these risks.
That’s why it’s important to consider global market investing. It allows you to diversify your investments, reducing your exposure to the risks of a single country. For those living in developing nations, where local currencies tend to depreciate faster than those in more stable economies, this is particularly crucial.
For instance, back in 2014, the Kenyan Shilling was valued at around 89 Shillings to the US Dollar. Today, that exchange rate has risen to approximately 129 Shillings to the Dollar. If you had invested in US Dollars back then, your returns would be significantly higher, even without further investments.
By investing globally, you protect yourself against local currency depreciation, inflation, and give yourself access to higher returns in markets that are performing well.
In summary, global market investing provides a way to diversify, protect your wealth from local economic challenges, and take advantage of opportunities for higher returns in stronger markets.
