Once considered a quiet paradise, the island of Margarita stood as a top tourist and cruise destination in the Caribbean. Known as the ‘Pearl of the Caribbean,’ the island offered tourists an alternative to overdeveloped islands in the Caribbean. Though the collapse of Venezuela’s once-growing tourism sector was accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the demise of Margarita had a slow build-up. Revamping tourism could be a key engine for recovery and economic growth in Venezuela taking advantage of the country’s remarkable performance in natural and cultural attractiveness.
