We love growing Osage Orange from seed. Over the years we've learned how to simplify and distill out steps to what feels like a very low energy and reliable method to get a huge number of seedling trees of Osage.
We collect fruits in the fall as they drop, then store them in crates over winter, outside but sometimes with some leaves and wood chips over the crates, but no real protection. They freeze solid, they thaw, they freeze, thaw, rot, break down, over and over. By spring the fruits are covered in mold and soft and the seeds are super ready to germinate and grow!
Smeared out on decent garden soil and covered with a little soil they germinate well and can grow quite nicely in their first year.
