The fall of Western Rome is a protracted process of the decline of the Western Roman Empire, as a result of which the state was unable to manage its vast territory and ceased to exist. In 378, the Romans suffered a crushing defeat at Adrianapolis from the Visigoths. In 410, Rome was taken by the Visigoths of Alaric, and in 455, Gaiseric's vandals broke into the city and plundered Rome for two weeks. On September 4, 476, the leader of the Germans, Odoacer, overthrew the last emperor of the Western Roman Empire, Romulus Augustus, and sent his insignia to Constantinople. Thus ended the centuries-old dominion of Rome.
