Canadian Fiddlers’ Advent Calendar 2018

Welcome to day 31! The final day of the calendar! Thanks to all who followed along each day this month. Also, a HUGE thank you to all of the fiddlers who took the time to contribute a video to this project. We belong to such a wonderful, close knit community. 😊

December 31 – Gordon Stobbe & JJ Guy – Seaforth, NS & Saskatoon, SK – “Linda Duford”

What a way to end the month of fiddle tunes by some of my favourite Canadian fiddlers! Gordon and JJ are collectively known as “Twin Fiddles” and are often seen sharing the stage together. Gordon is “Mr. Fiddle Camp” and teaches at camps and workshops probably more than 200 days of the year. He is a wonderful player and composer, and he just lights up every room he’s in.

I also first met him at Emma Lake my first year there, and instantly fell in love with his beautiful tunes. His sound and style is completely his own – born and raised in Saskatchewan, now living in Nova Scotia, Gordon is a pot-pourri of different styles all boiled down into, well, Gordon Stobbe style.

JJ Guy, currently living in Saskatoon, was also a fiddle contest brat like me, and I remember him and his sister Emma competing at the Govan, SK fiddle contest in matching cowboy outfits. They were both born entertainers and if you see JJ live in concert, you’ll see that nothing has changed. Maybe you won’t see the cowboy outfit, but you’ll most definitely be entertained!

Together, the two of them are unparalleled when it comes to providing entertainment. They have written a whole bunch of tunes together and released four “Twin Fiddles” CDs and books. Most of the tunes are written for people they’ve met and places they have travelled together, and every single one has a great story to go with it.

In this video, they are playing a fabulous tune they wrote for this series’ Day 5 fiddler, “Linda Duford.” Cathy Sproule is joining them on piano. I know you’re going to love it!
