Photographs of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrating Ganesh Puja at the CJI’s residence, have sparked a row and a debate on the integrity of the judiciary. Discussing the issue in an interview with The Federal, Justice Govind Mathur, former chief justice of the Allahabad High Court says the photographs, which were completely avoidable, have caused serious injury to the image of the judiciary. Asserting that judges are required to stick to a certain code of conduct, Justice Mathur says the photos have set a dangerous precedent for future CJIs as well as high court and district court judges.
