Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...
Q: My current focus is on becoming a solid rhythm guitarist. My feel is good, but I need to understand more on how chords get used. I've been reading up on Primary & Secondary chord use and I need help. Can you produce a guitar lesson covering how to use the different levels of diatonic harmony. Mainly how they can interact with each other in progressions as both chords, and as arpeggio riffs. Thanks!
Steve - Nazareth, PA. USA
A: Gaining a solid understanding for how the Primary and Secondary chords of diatonic harmony operate is probably one of the most valuable skills of any good rhythm guitarist. Plus, it is truly one of the core abilities of any session guitarist who spends almost all their time in the studio working on recording & production projects. This process involves either the layering or the replacement of certain chords within an already established progression. For example, if I were in the key of, "C Maj." and I wanted to replace the chord of, "Em," I could do this with one of two of its secondary's, which would either be the "Am," or the key center chord itself of, "C maj." If you have a solid understanding for this system, you can add, replace or swap-out any of the various secondary chords. Plus, within this system, you can apply these same strategies for use with arpeggios as well.
