The so-called "boxing movement" originates from a Chinese secret society that arose at the beginning of the 19th century to protect peasants from bandits. The name, which is translated from Chinese as fist fights for justice and unity, was shortened to "boxers" by Europeans. The movement spread in the 1890s, especially in the Northern areas of China.
