I am processing our firewood for next years burning season and I wanted to take a moment to share notes on a processing style I've used for almost 10 years now that provides some very valuable return on investment of time and labor. I use an old chop saw that we've had in the shop for almost 30 years now, with a standard coarse wood cutting blade (the same blade has processed easily over 2 cord of wood AND been used to make lots of carpentry projects, its amazing!!!) to process smaller gauge branch wood into firewood.
Instead of spending most of my time felling large, mature trees and needing a heavy duty saw to buck heavy rounds and then split everything into firewood I seek out a lot of branchwood and smaller trees to provide a lot of our firewood. This helps me select for larger trees in the landscape and clear out the understory to help promote new younger growth. Of course, we still use other wood and more standard looking firewood if/when it comes to us, but most of our firewood comes from rounds processed in this way and it has kept us warm for many years!
