Richard Powers discussed "The Overstory" at the 2019 Library of Congress National Book Festival in Washington, D.C.
- Richard Powers's new novel, "The Overstory," has been called "a masterpiece of operatic proportions" by Kirkus Reviews. Powers thought his first novel, "Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance," would be his last because he would not be able to support himself as a writer. It was a huge success. Powers calls his second book, "Prisoner's Dilemma," his "most American" work. It is about Disney and the logic of nuclear warfare. His landmark "The Gold Bug Variations" followed; it is concerned with polyphonic music, genetics and computer science - a story of love and death.
