The story of Kópakonan, also known as the seal woman, is a well-known legend from the Faroe Islands. According to the legend, seals are believed to be people who voluntarily gave up their lives in the ocean. Once a year, on the twelfth night, they are allowed to come ashore to shed their animal skins and enjoy simple human pleasures like dancing and having fun.
A young fisherman from the village of Mikladealur decided to check whether this legend was true, and on the twelfth night, he hid on the shore. He saw a huge flock of seals swim up to the shore, and one by one, they shed their skins and became human-like. One of the girls who came ashore was so beautiful that he stole her animal skin when she wasn't looking.
The fisherman held the seal girl's skin for ransom and promised to return it only if she agreed to marry him. She gave birth to several children, but the fisherman refused to give her back her skin. One day, he forgot the key to the chest where he kept the skin, and when he returned home, he found that his wife had left him and their children.
Despite being free from captivity, Kópakonan never forgot her children and watched over them as a seal whenever they went to the beach. Today, a sculpture of Kópakonan stands on the Faroe island of Kalsoy, reminding visitors of this tragic but enduring legend.
