Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...

Q: It's been 3 years of playing for me, the basics are down and I feel like the next step is to improve my ear. I tried some of the ear training software /apps, but I just can't hear notes or chords too good. It seems like this is going to be difficult. Can you suggest a way to get started with at least being able to recognize short melodic sounds? I need help with this.
Norm - Montgomery, Alabama USA

A: Recognizing a melody, or lifting off a chord progression, or a guitar solo, can be tedious and often-times difficult. And, this will even apply to advanced guitar players with many years of playing experience. Guitar parts can be littered with effects, the processing, or the recording methods used, can all play havoc with being able to properly hear notes and hear the parts. The best way to start developing an ability for hearing music is to chunk it down so that it's really manageable and easy to hold in your memory. Once something is broken down into smaller segments, and once we better understand how a melody might operate across the fingerboard, we will begin noticing similarities with how the music we listen to can wind up sitting on our guitar neck. This short melody approach will be the system we use to start learning to hear music. In the lesson we will also organize more than one option for how songs might be transcribed on the guitar.
