GAMEPLAY MODE: Ridden Versus Cleaners

Back 4 Blood is the spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead 2, commonly abbreviated as L4D2, being made by the same developers who left Valve around 2010 (Turtle Rock Studios). The goal in Versus, similar to the L4D-series, is to survive waves of zombies coming right at the survivors or cleaners (the latter being the name used in B4B), and survive as long as possible. In addition to computer-controlled zombies, the other enemy team can play special infected Ridden with powers tailored for more specific situations to aid in overwhelming and eventually finishing off the cleaners.

Should cleaners actually make it to the very end (which is really hard, even on the easiest difficulty), they get the maximum reward. If not, the score is basically the amount of time they have been able to survive until death. After either result, the teams will swap and compete once again with the same options and map until a winner is declared.

I've played my fair share of Left 4 Dead 2 (never the original, sadly), and truth be told almost nothing of the game feels the same or resembles the original mindset or ambience from the L4D-series. Admittedly, this is nearly impossible to do. I still consider Valve the king of multiplayer games, and knowing they were behind the team's original titles, a comparison may just be unfair. Needless to say, many people WILL compare both, and those looking for a similar let alone improved Left 4 Dead 2 experience will be very disappointed. It looks good, though, and the gameplay mechanics feel polished already. I may not be the biggest fan of the 3rd-person Ridden perspective, but you get used to it after a while.

Overall worth trying out, even if you might just prefer continuing L4D. But hey, here's to hoping Left 4 Dead 3 will ever come out, right?
