Before I include the description, I wanted to say that my wife's grandfather was in the 1st Marine Division, from the start of WWII to the end. He use to say "The first, of the first, of the first" when asked which unit he served with. He made it through every battle involving the 1st Marine Division without a scratch, until they went into Okinawa. Towards the end of that battle, he was attempting to take out a Japanese machine gun bunker when he was raked from bottom to top by "that damn Nambu machine gun!" He said he went down, passed out, then weeks later woke up on a hospital ship. Everything he had with him, he lost, but he came out with his life. He died about 10 years ago, and I wish I had sat down and talked with him more. It was difficult for him. When he would talk about the war, especially the battle for Peleliu Island, his eyes would open wide, and he could recall every detail. It was here that he lost his best friend, another Marine he grew up with and joined the USMC with on the same day. He was a brave man - a true patriot!
