The Mursi women wear the clay plates in their lips as a sign of beauty, and this is a big part of their culture. They don't wear them all the time, but I can't imagine how heavy they would be.
Our goal in learning about other cultures is just to learn and not to judge. However, it does seem like most girls aren't necessarily given an option to NOT do this (they cut their lips around age 11 as part of a ceremony), and one of the women told us she didn't like it, so we hope that in the future each Mursi woman will be able to decide for herself this aspect of their culture.
The Mursi women were so kind to share about their culture with us, and we were so happy to spend time with them!
