আদম (আ.)-এর মাধ্যমে মানবসভ্যতার সূচনা হয়েছিল। তিনি ছিলেন প্রথম মানুষ ও প্রথম নবী। আসমানি ধর্মগুলোর (ইসলাম, খ্রিস্টান ও ইহুদি) বিশ্বাস হলো, পৃথিবীর সব মানুষ আদম (আ.)-এর বংশধর। পবিত্র কোরআনে ইরশাদ হয়েছে, ‘হে মানুষ, তোমরা তোমাদের প্রতিপালককে ভয় কোরো, যিনি তোমাদের এক ব্যক্তি থেকে সৃষ্টি করেছেন এবং যিনি তা থেকে তাঁর স্ত্রী সৃষ্টি করেন, যিনি তাদের দুজন থেকে বহু নর-নারী ছড়িয়ে দেন।
