In this tutorial, I show you how to make roles on Discord and add roles to your server. You can create roles in your Discord server through the Discord server settings. In the server settings, you will need to go to the roles page and click the Create Role button.
To make a role on Discord you will then need to customize the settings. The main option is changing the name. Ideally, you will want to name your Discord role something to do with your server topic. However, simple role names also work well.
When you create a Discord role you can give the role a color. When someone has this role their name will appear as the selected color. However, if a member has a second role that is higher on the roles list then their name will feature the color of the higher role.
One of the most important steps when making a role on Discord is to set up the permissions. Depending on the role and your server the permissions could be any combination of things. Fortunately, each permission has an accurate description of what it does, which makes setting up permissions much easier. For most roles you can typically get away with clearing all permissions, then controlling role permissions through channels instead.
Another thing to consider is the role order. When you add roles to your server it is essential to have them placed in order. Role that appear higher on the role list have more power and control. This means you will want to have moderator and staff roles near the top of the list, while member roles will be placed at the bottom.
