The American badger is a tougher animal than a honey-eater, not even afraid of rattlesnakes!

These badgers are mostly active at night, but they are also often seen during the day. Mostly they spend daytime in dens which they dig by themselves. While digging a burrow a badger moves forward, burying itself in the ground. They may also occupy old coyote or fox burrows.
Badgers use burrows for different purposes, it all depends on the complexity of the burrow and its depth. Badgers use burrows for resting, raising their young, wintering, and storing food supplies. Some burrows are used as temporary, in such burrows badgers hide in case of danger. A typical North American badger's burrow is about 10 metres long and goes down to a depth of 3 metres.

If a badger is cornered, it can attack its enemy. Badgers are protected by strong neck muscles, thick skin and tough fur, but they also scratch, bite and squirt a foul-smelling liquid from their anal glands. The badger backs up, retreating to the nearest burrow, and when it slips inside, it clogs the entrance from the inside. When in danger, the badger hisses, squeals and growls.

Badgers are very tidy animals, always hiding their droppings and licking their coats.
