Hardstyle production specialist Toneshifterz describes how to build a hardstyle kick drum using Steinberg Cubase 11 and the Distroyer plug-in. Starting with an 808 or 909 drum machine or similar, you need a waveform with punch which you can apply a lot of distortion and eq to. Drag it to a sampler track to start manipulating the waveform in Distroyer, which can add asymmetrical distortion. It’s used to add heavy distortion, with the symmetry change and then boosting and cutting frequencies to change the sound of the kick to your taste. Once you are happy with the sound, you can use the render in place function to create a new file. You can then split the punch tock from the tail and apply pitch control to alter the baseline pitch shift of your hardstyle kick drum.
