How to Convert the Higher version to Lower version of DWG files in AutoCAD?

Tip 1: Installing AutoCAD 2018 can open all current versions of CAD drawings

Tip 2: Because converting a drawing to an earlier release format may cause some data loss, we recommend that you assign a different file name to avoid overwriting the current drawing file.

The latest version of DWGSee can open all versions dwg files, open the dwg file and then click “Save as” button, give the new drawing file a name and from the drop down menu of the “Save as type”, select DWG or DXF format and the CAD version. Choose where you want to keep the new drawing file and click “OK”.

DWG TrueView

Download and install the latest version of DWG TrueView (a free Autodesk file viewing software) and use the DWG Convert feature to convert the drawing.

Create a copy of the drawing file to be converted.

Launch DWG TrueView.

Click the application menu in the upper-left and choose DWG Convert (or pick it on the ribbon if a file is open).

•Add the file(s) in the Files Tree list (click the green plus Add Files button).

Click Convert.

In this post I will explain how to save to an earlier DWG file format in AutoCAD.

Did you know that the DWG file format is owned by Autodesk and every few years Autodesk update the DWG format. When this happens any older AutoCADs will be unable to open the newer DWGs.

But all is not lost, the newer AutoCADs can save back to the older DWG versions. We can specify this when we save a drawing or we can set AutoCAD to always save to a specific version.

How to save to a specific DWG Version
In AutoCAD we can do a one off save to a specified version, this is useful if, for example, you’re using AutoCAD 2018 and need to send a drawing to someone using AutoCAD 2017.

1. Open the drawing you want to save to a previous DWG version.
2. Go to “Save As”
3. In the “Save As” Window we have a dropdown box for “Files of Type”
4.From this dropdown we can choose what file type we want to save as including the previous versions of DWG.
