William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States, elected at the end of 1896, was a representative of the defense of the tariff policy and the introduction of imperialism. During his first term, he paid more attention to foreign policy issues. In 1897, America occupied Hawaii, and in 1898-1899 led a victorious war with Spain. Under his leadership, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines were acquired and the US protectorate over Cuba was established. The end of continental isolation under his presidency led to the rise of the United States as a world power. In terms of economic policy, McKinley's presidency benefited from a boom that was associated with the spread of monopolies and trusts. At the end of 1900, he was re-elected for a second term. The attack took place on September 5, 1901, during a reception that US President McKinley gave at the Pan-American Exposition in the concert hall, in the so-called "Temple of Music" in the city of Buffalo. Anarchist Leon Czolgosz mingles with a group of visitors, and when President McKinley turns to a little girl and pats her on the head, he approaches him, hiding a revolver under a napkin, and fires twice. One bullet hits the ribcage, the other penetrates the abdomen without damaging important organs such as the stomach and kidneys. After the crime, an unemployed steel worker from Cleveland was immediately arrested by the police, and the seriously injured president was taken to the home of an acquaintance. After his arrest, Čolgoš declared that he sympathized with the goals of the anarchist movement. He shot the president because the country needed a new form of government. After the president, using an unusual diet of water, whiskey and raw eggs, initially felt well and began to recover from his injuries, his condition worsened on September 13, eventually leading to his death. The solemn funeral of William McKinley took place on September 19 in his hometown of Kenton in the American state of Ohio. Leon Czolgosz was executed by electric chair on October 29 at Auburn Prison in New York.
