The story is about a young man named Jonathan Olofsson who learned to speak Russian fluently on his own, with the help of a friend he met online. Jonathan had an interest in languages before, having learned a bit of Italian from his grandfather and choosing to study additional English in school due to the low level of language education offered. However, it wasn't until he stumbled upon a funny Youtube video featuring people speaking Russian that he decided to take up the language as a hobby.
Jonathan found a Russian course for beginners on Youtube and watched videos of others who successfully learned the language on their own. He memorized the Cyrillic alphabet, bought a Russian dictionary, and began chatting with people exclusively in Russian on the Omegle chat forum to test his skills. Eventually, he connected with a Russian man named Dmitry, and they became friends. Jonathan taught Dmitry English and Swedish, while Dmitry helped him with Russian. They talked about politics, culture, and the lives of Dmitry's relatives in Soviet times.
After two visits to Yekaterinburg to meet Dmitry in person, Jonathan decided to move there to study Russian for foreigners at the university. He and his girlfriend Emma chose Yekaterinburg not only because Dmitry lived there, but also because Jonathan wanted to experience a "real Russian city." In Yekaterinburg, Jonathan quickly made friends and found a community of people who shared his interest in Irish folk music.
Jonathan found that speaking Russian required a different way of expressing his thoughts, as the spoken language is quite different from the written one. Over time, he not only became fluent in speaking and understanding Russian, but also developed an interest in grammar. He is now considering using his language skills in a future career as a teacher or translator.
