After being dropped by floatplane on Family Lake, then camping overnight on an island in Night Owl lake, I properly embark on my descent of the Berens River. The first major obstacle is Night Owl Falls, which means a 500m portage. Following a full day of paddling, I arrive at another island camp, next to the powerful Crane Falls. From here, over a number of days I get deeper and deeper into the boreal wilderness. The terrain gets more rugged, with spectacular rock formations and falls. Over some sections, the river splits into two or three channels, making the route finding more complex. Where I end up in this episode was a total surprise and a truly stunning location.
