Indian farmers have been grappling with soaring debt and low income, along with extreme weather conditions that are hurting their harvests. They are demanding higher, guaranteed prices for their produce. And they say without urgent government intervention, their industry faces ruin.

Farmers in Europe are wrestling with a crisis, too. They have taken to the streets to protest against higher costs and cheaper imports from places such as Ukraine that undercut their profits. They have also directed their anger towards the European Green Deal, a multi-sector plan to slash carbon emissions that calls for “short-term pain in exchange for long-term sustainability.”
