VirtualBox: Processor setting greyed out, only 1 CPU core

In VirtualBox, the option to select the number of processors is greyed out. I recently wanted to experiment in a virtual environment. I noticed that only one processor was configured. What's more, this setting could not be changed as it was greyed out.
