While officials did not arrest anyone for painting the messages "Black Lives Matter" and "Defund the Police" in bright yellow paint on the city streets, they banned The Frederick Douglass Foundation and Students for Life of America from painting a mural that said "Black Pre-Born Lives Matter," just one word different from the "Black Lives Matter" mural. When two students started writing pro-life messages in washable chalk on the sidewalk, DC officials immediately arrested them. A federal district court improperly dismissed the case, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit reversed that decision and allowed the lawsuit to proceed.
