Gregory Steinberg, professor of medicine at McMaster University, talks about a McMaster-led study that found that metformin induces the expression and secretion of a protein called growth differentiating factor 15, or GDF15. This discovery opens a number of avenues of research as scientists have been working to understand how a drug taken for diabetes may have beneficial effects on aging and other diseases. The study results were published in Nature Metabolism.
