Honesty Shouldn’t Get You Fired. That’s Why Dave is Suing the School that Fired Him.

Honesty is the best policy. Everyone agrees with that, right?

No, unfortunately. That’s not always the case. Take what happened at Vermont’s Woodstock Union High School, where snowboarding coach Dave Bloch was fired for speaking honestly and respectfully with his own players.

During downtime at a competition, Dave and two of his players discussed whether male athletes should compete against female athletes based on asserted gender identity.

Dave said that even though he recognizes that people may express themselves in particular ways, what matters most when it comes to sports is the very real differences between the sexes. He pointed out that an archeologist might not be able to determine whether a person identified as male or female, but he would be able to tell whether the bones had male or female DNA.

The discussion lasted less than three minutes. Everyone remained respectful. Even though they may not have agreed, the conversation ended on friendly terms.

Still, he school district seized upon that conversation to fire Dave the very next day.

What the district did was wrong. Public school employees can’t be fired for respectfully expressing their views on matters of public concern. That’s censorship, and it violates the First Amendment’s guarantee of free speech.

That’s why, with the help of Alliance Defending Freedom, Dave filed a lawsuit to challenge both his firing and the policy that gave administrators cover to punish him for speaking.

This is America. Government officials—including public school administrators—can’t be allowed to ruin our careers and destroy our reputations just because they disagree with what we have to say.
