THIS VIDEO USED TO HAVE ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS IN ANNOTATIONS, UNTIL YOUTUBE DECIDED TO REMOVE THEM. Please send all complaints to youtube. Thanks.

This video is about how to use the popular free image editor GIMP to add a text overlay to an animated GIF, This is a quick and easy edit and does not involve the use of any additional plug-ins or add-ons

If anyone is looking for a source of sample animated GIFs to try out this tutorial, go have a look here: http://giphy.com/search/movie-clip/3

Since youtube deleted my annotations, here is the list shortcuts used to create the animation layers. Please also note that a GIF must be converted to RGB mode using Image → Mode → RGB before editing it.

To copy the text layer initially, this needs to only be done once:
Ctrl+A (select all)
Ctrl+C (copy)

Then for each frame/layer, you need to repeatedly press the following keys in this order:
Ctrl+V (paste)
Ctrl+H (anchor)
Down Arrow (move to next layer below)

Note: The shortcuts above need to be repeated for each frame of the animation, so for example, if there are 50 layers, you will need to do it 50 times.
