In which I play the notes of a musical cuckoo movement
I'm cleaning and repairing a musical cuckoo clock, and ran into the question "are the pins of a music box tuned to a simple scale, or not?"
I had thought that all music box combs (the tines that are plucked by the pins on the barrel) were the same. Listen to how instead this music box's comb is matched to the tune it plays.
So it seems true that if your cuckoo clock's musical movement's comb breaks, you probably need to replace the whole musical movement. ...unless you can find a used one that matches what you have.
