Indigenous Advance has been serving vulnerable children in Uganda since 2015. But in April 2023, it received a series of letters from Bank of America informing it that the bank would close its accounts within 30 days.
Bank of America didn't provide a clear reason for the cancellation but simply alluded to its "risk tolerance" policy. Unfortunately, multiple banks have been using similar tactics to cancel the accounts of people or organizations they disagree with in a practice known as "de-banking."
At Bank of America's annual shareholder meeting on April 24, 2024, Steve Happ of Indigenous Advance shared about his accounts being canceled and urged shareholders to support the Report on Risks of Politicized De-banking. Following the meeting, Steve, ADF Senior Vice President of Corporate Engagement Jeremy Tedesco, and Indiana Treasurer Dan Elliott spoke to the media about the harmful practice of de-banking.
