The West Point School Board in Virginia fired high school French teacher Peter Vlaming after he declined to use male pronouns to refer to a female student because doing so would violate his core beliefs. Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys filed a lawsuit, and after a lower court wrongly dismissed the case, the Virginia Supreme Court reinstated it.
In its ruling, the Virginia Supreme Court affirmed that the Virginia Constitution “seeks to protect diversity of thought, diversity of speech, diversity of religion, and diversity of opinion.” Following this favorable ruling for Peter, the West Point School Board agreed to a settlement which vindicated Peter and paid $575,000 in damages and attorneys’ fees.
